What Are Concho Belts? The American West's Most Iconic Leather Accessory

There's a reason concho belts have never gone out of style. From the dusty trails of the 19th-century Southwest to the stages of Nashville and the arenas of the modern rodeo circuit, these striking leather accessories carry centuries of craft, culture, and character in every hammered disc. At Gavere Leather, Jeff and Linda have been handcrafting concho belts in High Springs, Florida since 1973 — and the story of how we got here is worth telling.

A History Forged in Silver

The word concho (sometimes spelled concha) comes from the Spanish for shell — and the shape says it all. When Spanish conquistadors arrived in the Americas in the 1500s, they brought with them a tradition of hammered silver medallions worn as military decoration and symbols of status.

But it was the Native American silversmiths of the Southwest who truly transformed the concho into an art form. The Navajo learned the craft of metalworking from Mexican traders, and it is believed that the first concho belt was an adaptation of the decorative horse bridle buckles they encountered through that trade. As contact with Europeans in the Plains Territory grew, Navajo silversmiths began hammering silver coins into disc-shaped conchos and stringing them onto leather strips — creating the belt form we recognize today.

These weren't just accessories. The intricate geometric and floral designs stamped into each concho represented extraordinary skill and patience, worked one disc at a time with handmade dies and a hammer. The Navajo are credited as the first Native Americans to produce silver jewelry in the region, and their contribution to the concho belt's design still echoes in every piece made today.

As cowboys and settlers moved through the Southwest in the late 1800s, they adopted the concho belt as part of their working dress — drawn to its combination of rugged durability and unmistakable visual presence. Today, concho belts are worn and appreciated by both men and women around the world. You can read a deeper dive into this history on our Origin of Concho Belts page.

What Makes a Quality Concho Belt?

Not all concho belts are made equal. A genuine, long-lasting concho belt comes down to three things: the leather, the conchos, and how they're put together.

The Leather At Gavere Leather, every belt is cut from heavy top-grain cowhide — 9/10 oz oak-tanned tooling leather, the same standard we've held since 1973. Top-grain leather retains the hide's strongest fibers, giving it the durability to outlast cheaper splits and bonded leather by decades. No composite, bonded, or glued leather is allowed in our High Springs facility.

Each belt is then hand-finished through our exclusive 16-step finishing process, which gives Gavere belts their characteristic look and feel — a finish that holds up to real wear and improves with age.

The Conchos: Silver or Gold Our concho belts feature silver and gold-colored conchos in a range of designs that speak to the Western tradition: crosses, stars, eagles, hearts, longhorn ovals, buffalo nickels, and specific military branch emblems, among others. Conchos are placed every 5 to 6 inches along the belt, with 5 or 6 conchos per belt depending on the size ordered.

Beyond concho belts, we also carry a selection of individual concho hardware — silver and gold-colored cross conchos, coin-style designs, and more — for adding to your existing embossed or name belt.

Construction Gavere belts are 1½" wide and come with a standard utility buckle, a leather keeper, and durable snaps — so you can swap in any buckle of your choice. Every belt leaves our High Springs warehouse made by hand, the way it's been done here for over 50 years.

How to Style a Concho Belt

A well-chosen concho belt is one of the most versatile accessories in a Western wardrobe. Here's how to wear one across three occasions:

Rodeo & Ranch This is concho country. A 1½" belt in black or brown leather with bold concho hardware looks at home with snap-button shirts, straight-leg jeans, and boots. Let the conchos carry the look — keep the rest of your outfit simple and the hardware will do the rest.

Country Casual Concho belts work beautifully with everyday wear when you pair them with the right outfit. Dark denim or chinos with Chelsea or Western boots and a chambray or flannel shirt strike the right balance — Western in spirit without going full rodeo. Heart or cross conchos in particular work well for a toned-down, everyday look.

Western Formal For weddings, concerts, and nights out, a concho belt with silver-toned hardware elevates almost any outfit. Wear it with a tailored Western jacket and dark jeans, or as the centerpiece of a dressed-up country look. The contrast between a dark leather strap and bright silver conchos does the heavy lifting. Browse our Western-themed belts for options suited to more formal occasions.

Getting the Right Fit

Belt sizing matters — and Gavere Leather is specific about how to get it right.

Do not order your pants size. Instead, measure an existing belt from the tip of the buckle prong to the hole you currently use. That measurement is your belt size. Every Gavere belt is made with your measured size as the center hole, with three holes smaller and three larger — seven holes total — giving you plenty of adjustment room.

For women, don't use your pants size either. Measure with a tape where you plan to wear the belt (waist, hips, or in between), using the same method as above.

For younger riders, we've put together a dedicated children's sizing chart to help you get the fit right. A well-fitted concho belt makes a memorable gift for kids who love the Western style — and ours are built to grow with them.

If you're still unsure, reach out before ordering. We're happy to help.

How to Pick a Belt Fast

Your go-to guide for choosing the right leather belt in minutes, without compromising on style, fit or personality.

Choosing the right belt shouldn’t take more than a few minutes. With a few style cues and a basic checklist, you can match your outfit, personality, and lifestyle without second-guessing yourself. Here’s a clear, fast way to do it—especially if you’re looking at custom leather belts, engraved leather belts, or western custom belts where details matter.

Start With Purpose

Ask yourself: where is this belt going?

Everyday / Work Casual
Go for quality leather, neutral tones, clean buckle. Reliable, intentional, not loud.

Dress & Occasions
Thin-to-medium width, smooth finish, simple hardware. Personalization still works here — but keep it subtle.

Western / Heritage Look
This is where tooled leather belts, conchos, and engraved buckles live proudly. If you wear boots often, this lane fits you.

Gift / Personal Touch
A name belt, engraved hardware, custom floral tooling — something personal always wins, especially for western fans and craftsmen at heart.

Width & Fit

Quick rules:

  • Dress pants: 1.25″–1.5″

  • Jeans / Casual: 1.5″–2″

  • Western: 1.75″–2.5″

Belts should buckle around the middle hole — and custom sizing avoids that awkward extra-tail situation.

Leather & Finish

If you care about longevity and patina, start with full-grain leather. It ages like real leather should — softer, richer, and uniquely yours over time.

Smooth = sleek and refined
Tooled / textured = character, craftsman touch, western influence

What Fashion Is Saying Right Now

Belt presence is climbing again — not just function, but styling focus.

Vogue Scandinavia recently highlighted how belts are being used this season as intentional styling pieces, not just accessories — styled over coats, cinching knits, and grounding tailored looks

(Vogue Scandinavia, “The 3 standout accessories trends to shop this fall” — https://www.voguescandinavia.com/articles/the-3-standout-accessories-trends-to-shop-this-fall).

They point to rich textures and warm tones dominating fall accessories — exactly where high-quality leather shines.

Glamour echoed the same shift toward bold accessories and tactile materials in their latest trend report (Glamour, “Accessory Trends” — https://www.glamour.com/story/accessory-trends). Leather belts fit perfectly into that moment: something with heritage, texture, and intention.

Translation for your closet:
Earthy browns, deep tans, layered leather textures, hand-worked details — they’re not just western staples, they’re seasonal fashion staples too.

Personalization

If you’re going custom, go all in. Options you can choose at Gavere Leather:

A personalized belt is something that gets remembered — not just worn.

Final Word

A good belt isn’t an afterthought — it quietly anchors your outfit.
A custom belt? It carries your story too.

Pick your purpose, width, leather, buckle, and personalization — and you’re done. Fast, confident, and stylish.

If you want a belt that fits you and your look, not the other way around, custom is the way
